Lot 1056
HUNNIC TRIBES, Uncertain. AE (Bronze, 16 mm, 1.38 g, 1 h), Gandhara, circa 4th-8th century. Draped bust of Menander I to right, wearing crested helmet adorned with pelt. Rev. Athena advancing left, holding decorated shield on her left arm and brandishing thunderbolt with her right. Type GC-G1. Very fine.

From a collection of coins from Central Asia.

This coin belongs to the 'Gandharan Copper' series struck by local Huna rulers in the Peshawar plain, a melting pot of different cultural traditions. It is a very interesting issue that reintroduces the iconography of drachms of the Indo-Greek Menander (155-130 BC).
